I tells ya, IE6 is the bane of the internet. Such old, - [Almost there!!](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2010/02/almost-there/) - Sorry again for lack of updates!! Just wanted to jump in and let people know that I've almost finished coding up the new template and it's looking great! So, update on how I'm going - erm, leg's not holding up too well :P The issues that cropped up a week or two back have come back again, so it's out with the walking stick again to - [International Day of People with Disability](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/11/international-day-of-people-with-disability/) - Thanks to coverage on my local radio station of choice, Fresh FM, Tuesday December 3 is International Day of People with Disability (http://www.idpwd.com.au/). I actually hadn't heard of this before, despite the fact I've had my awesome leg of awesomeness since I was a year or two old, so it was great to hear it - [Stupid stump](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/11/stupid-stump/) - As the heading suggests, I'm in a very mature and rational mood :P Was heading home from work yesterday looking forward to jumping into a good session last night at the dojo, and thought - "My stump feels a bit funny, I'm sure there's nothing wrong with the prosthesis though". By the time I got - [Cool, the amputee driving/travel tips worked!](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/11/cool-the-amputee-drivingtravel-tips-worked/) - Back in August (here) I blogged about a few things you can do while driving long distances to stretch your stump out on a road trip. The weekend before last Wifey and I jumped out into the far north to catch up with my little brother Tank and his lovely wife Meru, and while the - [Amputee country driving](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/08/amputee-country-driving/) - Wifey and I took a trip to the country to escape from things for a few days recently. It's been a few years since we last jumped out that way, and it's definitely been the first time in a while (and possibly since starting this blog) since I've spent a couple of hours at the - [Mangling my leg (again :P)](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/11/mangling-my-leg-again/) - So, no training last week (as alluded to in my previous post) - this was due to two things. First and foremost, I had a family dinner on the night I usually train, so that kinda knocked that out. But even if that wasn't on, more serious than that was my recent mangling of my - [Catching up on a few weeks' worth of training](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/11/catching-up-on-a-few-weeks-worth-of-training/) - This one's a bit belated, so apologies for the delay! While I didn't train last week (more on that later), I have been working hard in and around class the few weeks prior to that. Training during both of those weeks was really full-on... or if it wasn't, I was working myself as hard as - [Note to self - don't over-complicate things :P](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/11/note-to-self-dont-over-complicate-things-p/) - I was reading a great piece Matt wrote over at Ikigai Way about how over-complicating technique when it comes to martial arts can be extremely counterproductive when translating said techniques into a real-world scenario (here). I can definitely see what he's getting at, and can also relate to over-complicating things :) I think part of - [Awesome home-spun machete vs pipe fight clip at Martial Explorer!](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/11/awesome-home-spun-machete-vs-pipe-fight-clip-at-martial-explorer/) - Huge props to Jesse over at The Martial Explorer - he was involved with a video production a while back that saw him having a machete vs iron pipe biffo on the top of a small building, complete with gratuitous kicking of his opponent into a swimming pool below. The final cut's been put together, - [Systems back to normal](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/11/systems-back-to-normal/) - Just FYI - looks like the problem with my host has been fixed, so the website should be back to normal now. Thanks for your patience! :) - [Sluggish website performance](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/11/sluggish-website-performance/) - For those who might have noticed and have been affected, the site's been running really slowly for a few days now (coming close to a week, actually) - I'm currently following it up with the hosting provider, so hopefully it'll get fixed soon enough. Thanks for bearing with me in the interim!! - [More love for the Magic Mud](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/10/more-love-for-the-magic-mud/) - The Rotarua Thermal Mud (aka Magic Mud) came to my rescue (again!) this week - I've discussed before how it's like a piece of awesome in liquid/paste/cream/whatever form (as recently as just over a month ago, actually!), and following this week's training (particularly the resistance training on the stances), my knee was feeling a bit - [Training in the warm weather :)](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/10/training-in-the-warm-weather/) - Despite the fact it's nearly the end of October, training this week was the first time in a while where it's actually been warm enough in the evening to bring on a crazy sweat! We did some interesting things in class this week, and there are a few things I've picked up on that need - [Examples of real-world martial arts](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/10/examples-of-real-world-martial-arts/) - Matt over at Ikigai has posted a couple of interesting blogs this month, both of them showing good examples of what I would call "real-world martial arts", or instances where previous martial arts training resulted in a swift resolution to an act (or perceived act) of physical violence. The first one concerns a home owner - [Small group, great training](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/10/small-group-great-training/) - Another week, and another small class. Wasn't a bad thing though, as it gave Jyastin-kun and I plenty of time to work on basic techniques and combinations. I know it may sound a bit silly, but even going back to basics and concentrating on taking simplistic techniques but approaching them with an ever-increasing view to - [Easing back into training](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/10/easing-back-into-training/) - Training this week went really well, even though there wasn't much of a turn-out (only myself and Jyastin-kun!). Still, it made for an excellent session, as we both got plenty of instruction and had the opportunity to focus on improving the quality of our technique. We actually had Dai-Sensei taking us for this class (well, - [Back into weight training](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/10/back-into-weight-training/) - For the first time in a month or so, I jumped back into the shed to go a weights session - it's good to be back into it, too! I actually meant to do a set last night after work, but spent my time tidying up the shed, re-bolting the boxing station into the floor, - [Mr Miyagi has a first name (thanks Wikipedia!)](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/10/mr-miyagi-has-a-first-name-thanks-wikipedia/) - So, erm, Mr Miyagi has a first name and stuff - Kesuke apparently. I mean, it was probably said in there somewhere, I just never knew. As far as I know, it's Mr Miyagi, thank you very much. What's more silly/amusing is that there is a Wikipedia page on the character of Mr Miyagi... seriously, - [This week is now (un)officially the Noriyuki "Pat" Morita/Mr Miyagi appreciation week](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/10/this-week-is-no-unofficially-the-noriyuki-pat-moritamr-miyagi-appreciation-week/) - This week on Gisoku Budo, inspired by the previous couple of posts, I will be focusing on nothing else but the awesomeness of Noriyuki "Pat" Morita and Mr Miyagi. I was actually intending on writing this post yesterday, so luckily enough there will be two posts on his awesomeness made today to make up for - [Mr Miyagi attacks using the power of awesomeness](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/10/mr-miyagi-attacks-using-the-power-of-awesomeness/) - A YouTube trio today of Mr Miyagi attacking using the power of awesomeness: The Halloween fight from the first movie :D lol, I love the internet and its alternate take on things :D I don't like The Karate Kid Part III much, but this is still awesome :D - [Happy Days' Arnold teaches Richie judo](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/10/happy-days-arnold-teaches-richie-judo/) - So Wifey and I are currently watching season 3 of Happy Days as she's keen to get me to appreciate the series since she's a fan. Being the very clever girl she is, she's picked the series that introduces Arnold, aka Noriyuki "Pat" Morita, aka Mr Miyagi. To say I had a crazy head spin - [The Karate Kid movies are still awesome (well, at least the first 2)](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/10/the-karate-kid-movies-are-still-awesome-well-at-least-the-first-2/) - So we were channel surfing a week or two back, and lo-and-behold, the first Karate Kid movie was on, and Noriyuki "Pat" Morita was being all awesome and stuff, and it was supremely awesome. I don't know how many times I've seen the first Karate Kid movie, but I swear I could watching it once - [Working on my mawashi geri technique](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/10/working-on-my-mawashi-geritechnique/) - So last month I whinged about my crap mawashi geri technique, and while I haven't been to training in a two weeks due to all sorts happening, I'm pleased to say that I haven't put my training completely out of my mind. Much as Wifey loves it, I do have the habit of doing karate - [Hints on how to be an urban ninja](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/09/ints-on-how-to-be-an-urban-ninja/) - That's a catchy title for what is a really interesting post at The Martial Explorer titled "How to hide in plain sight". While Jesse's not in any way suggesting urban ninja action, I thought that the principles there sound like something from an awesome urban ninja film, possibly set in 1980s California or New York, - [Getting back into a routine](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/09/getting-back-into-a-routine/) - Well, we're into September now and I still haven't gotten into a decent/consistent routine of doing proper training between classes. It's been a very wet six weeks which certainly hasn't helped (though I'm not knocking the rain, it's normally so dry down here it's nice for a change!!), as I actually train in my nice - [Plugging another blog :)](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/09/plugging-another-blog/) - Just wanted to take a moment to point to another blog I've added to my list - A Teaspoon of Treacle. Why the plug? Because it's Wifey's new blog :) We've been talking for a while now about her starting up her own foodie blog as she's extremely talented in the kitchen and has been - [I want a kuwa](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/09/i-want-a-kuwa/) - I was just over at Ikigai and read Matt's recent post on the Okinawan hoe, the kuwa, as an element of kobudo training. Intrigued, I then watched the bunkai clip he posted from YouTube; I can now confidently say that the kuwa if officially awesome. I'm sure Wifey is going to be just thrilled to - [Bruised belly!](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/09/bruised-belly/) - This is an image of my stomach just above the belly button after a short session of iron stomach training - Jyastin-kun has excellent targeting and accuracy considering how many strikes we did and it's all focused into a single spot! This photo was taken Friday, so by now it's started going all yellow around - [Hard training](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/09/hard-training/) - Just wanted to add a quick post on this week's training - in addition to the iron stomach conditioning, we also did some general arm conditioning as well, and some cool 2-person drills that eventually evolved into a continuous flow of blocks and strikes, with both sides playing the part of aggressor/defender with relative equality. - [Iron stomach training](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/09/iron-stomach-training/) - Had a bit more body conditioning at training this week, including something that was really fun - iron stomach training! In the previous style I used to do, we'd messed around a little with this premise before, so it's been a while since I've last done it. I was quite surprised at how much punishment - [Paint the house](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/09/paint-the-house/) - Yes, I know he's painting the fence - I couldn't find a picture of Miyagi helping to paint the house :P Last weekend was spent trying to be useful as McAdam is moving into his new place next weekend. This involved lifting heavy things, driving around with a trailer on the back of the car - [Four lies and one martial arts fact](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/09/four-lies-and-one-martial-arts-fact/) - Jesse over at The Martial Explorer has tagged me in an awesome bit of blogging tomfoolery. Being rather chuffed to be picked out for this (despite the fact he tagged my almost 2 weeks ago!!!), here 'tis: The meme works as follows. You post five things about yourself. Four are untrue. One is true. All - [Open your mind](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/09/open-your-mind/) - Matt over at Ikigai posted an awesome and humble post on the importance of keeping an open mind when approaching the study and practice of martial arts. There really isn't a whole lot more to add to what he's covered, and I can see my journey through a lot of what he has said. While - [On padwork...](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/09/on-padwork/) - I was reading a post over at EPIC Martial arts on padwork earlier (I'm trying to finally get back to reading up on what my fellow MA bloggers have been up to, they've been busy!), and it got me to thinking - padwork is awesome :D In my current style, we haven't done a lot - [Training discussion part 3 – new kata!](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/09/training-discussion-part-3-–-new-kata/) - So to wrap things up, I also thought I'd share something about my new kata. In the past, I've really struggled with learning the pattern of kata, but this year I've been trying to go about learning kata a bit differently. First up, I'm trying hard to apply much greater focus in class and keeping - [Training discussion part 2 - mawashi geri pain](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/09/training-discussion-part-2-mawashi-geri-pain/) - So, continuing on from my previous post, at training last week we started focusing on improving mawashi geri technique as it's now formally graded as part of my syllabus, which means more practicing and more focus on improving the technique. Unfortunately for me, my mawashi geri is pretty rubbish, especially when kicking with my right - [Belated training roundup - a post in three parts :)](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/09/belated-training-roundup-a-post-in-three-parts/) - Didn't end up making it to training this week - I was being a good son and caught up with the family for my mum's birthday on the usual night I train, and on the alternate night we have training available I was home from work that day because my stump's been flaring up again, - [New companion blog](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/09/new-companion-blog/) - In an attempt to stave off the temptation to post about old video games on this blog, I've finally put the finishing touches on a companion blog where I can keep the off-topic stuff siphoned away to an appropriate place :) I've given the new blog an appropriately nerdy name - RetroOtaku - and you - [Belated training roundup :)](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/08/belated-training-roundup/) - It's a little belated, but I thought I'd do a round-up of last week's training :) Was a really good session, especially since it's been a few weeks since I last trained. I worked hard, and we covered some really good ground. I've also started on learning my new syllabus, which is a mixture of - [Weight watching](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/08/weight-watching/) - So there are two reasons I habitually check on my weight: Number one, I'm vain ;) I was a bit of a chubber when I was a kid, and got sick of it when I was around 15 and went on a crash, anally retentive diet for about 12 months. No snacks, smaller portions, exercise, - [Change of seasons... or is it???](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/08/change-of-seasons-or-is-it/) - Last week I was going to write a post about how the seasons have started to change, the days are starting to get a little bit longer, the evening's are a touch warmer and it'll make it easier as a result to get back into a solid training routine... and now I'm staring out the - [Giving the blog a facelift](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/08/giving-the-blog-a-facelift/) - I've been toying with the idea for a little while now about giving the blog a facelift and incorporate a few new tricks I've picked up over the last couple of months toying with a bit of ASP, implementing some jQuery scripts and picking up a few advanced-ish CSS tricks at work... And yes, I - [Martial arts... gardening?](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/08/martial-arts-gardening/) - Okay, bear with me on this one - a few weeks ago, I convinced my Dad it would be an awesome idea to come over and help me do some gardening. I wasn't talking about your run of the mill weeding/potting gardening - I had more destructive things in mind :) I didn't know chainsaws - [I'm a bad blogger](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/08/im-a-bad-blogger/) - I was just thinking that I've been pretty slack with catching up on my usual round of martial arts bloggers on my side panel, and wanted to quickly post up a "I still think you're all awesome :D" comment on my blog acknowledging that :) I blame it on a busy work schedule and my - [Mangled thumb](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/08/mangled-thumb/) - Observe the awesomeness that is my latest injury! ... well, rather, don't observe because I don't have any impressive images :) Didn't go to training last week as I was unable to even remotely form a fist with my right hand, which makes it hard to do all sorts of stuff, and I was afraid - [Website stuff](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/08/website-stuff/) - Just wanted to post a quick notice - I'm going to be doing some system admin stuff this afternoon, so apologies for any wierdness in the interim! Update: Looks like everything went smoothly, will update with some fresh content next week! Have a great weekend! - [Training round-up](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/08/training-round-up/) - Training this week was a little bit different - Sensei wasn't able to make it, so we had training with Dai-Sensei (the Big Sensei), who is actually my usual Sensei's father (and who I trained under during 2007-2008... which reminds me, I really should add a couple of posts to fill in the blank spaces - [7th kyu get! :)](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/08/7th-kyu-get/) - Original image by chris ?, sourced from Wikimedia Commons Had grading this morning - went very well (i.e. I passed my grading :P ). Got up early and did some stretching to get me ready for grading. Picked up Jyastin-kun on the way there, and got to class around 20mins to 9([am] - early start - [Crazy prosthetics technology - the i-LIMB](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/07/crazy-prosthetics-technology-the-i-limb/) - Was doing some random Googling and found this awesome blog - The Adventures of the i-LIMB. The blog's author, Darin, has had his left arm amputated from just below the elbow from what I can see in the videos he's posted, and he's documented a daily journal of his experiences with his i-LIMB, an awesome - [Belated congrats to Black Belt Mama!](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/07/belated-congrats-to-black-belt-mama/) - So, I was out of the loop during June and a little bit of July as well (click the links for the monthly roundups - not looking as healthy as my usual efforts!!), and this also means I'm also out of whack with what's been happening in the martial arts blogs I regularly read during - [Grading this weekend](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/07/grading-this-weekend/) - Just a short post on this one - we've got a grading coming up this weekend, and I'll be trying for mine. Since I had to start fresh with my current school back in 2007 it's still early days, and this time I'll be going for 7th kyu. I'm hoping that if I train hard - [Training roundup](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/07/training-roundup-2/) - Last night's training went really well - by the time I was finished the top of my gi was soaked with sweat, and whenever that happens, I always figure it's been a good session :) With grading coming up this weekend, there was a lot of emphasis on getting core techniques polished in preparation for - [Wishlist: transforming leg](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/07/wishlist-transforming-leg/) - A friend of mine fired through a link for a story about a double amputee in New Zealand who had a mermaid tail prosthesis created by WETA, and it got me to thinking about stuff. When I was 12, I was watching the very awesome third series of Robotech (which I later found out was - [Another lightbulb moment - amputee-friendly round kicks (mawashi geri)](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/07/another-lightbulb-moment-amputee-friendly-round-kicks-mawashi-geri/) - So, recently Wifey and I watched Enter the Dragon (again). And me being me, afterwards whilst getting ready for bed and doing the last-minute clean-up before bed, I started doing karate around the house - in the kitchen, the lounge room, the hallway, stuff like that. Weird thing though - I was practicing my mawashi - [Kata is kinda like watching subtitled anime...](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/07/kata-is-kinda-like-watching-subtitled-anime/) - So, let's get it out of the way for the nth time - I'm a bit nerdy, right? Anyway, part of my nerdy habits is that I like watching anime, but I'm picky in that I only like watching it in Japanese with subtitles (mind, I extend that to all foreign film/music - I'd rather - [Movie time: Enter the Dragon, in high-definition](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/07/movie-time-enter-the-dragon-in-high-definition/) - So, Enter the Dragon is one of those quintessential martial arts flicks that anyone who is into biffo on celluloid has seen at least twice. I first watched the movie years and years ago on late-night TV, and absolutely loved the combination of crazy afros, flares, martial arts biffo, bad dubbing and crazy 70s porno - [... oh yeah, looks like I'm back :)](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/07/oh-yeah-looks-like-im-back/) - Two posts in one day? That's crazy talk! :D Expect more updates this week and from now on - like I said earlier, it's been a hectic month or so, but I'm back in the blogging groove now! There's plenty to catch up on as well, as I haven't dropped by any of my regular - [Sore muscles!](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/07/sore-muscles/) - The weekend's seminar is catching up with me I think! It's quite interesting, as I didn't think I went full-on enough to be fighting sore muscles, bumps, bruises and stuff. I've got some choice bruises on my lower/upper arms, raw elbows, sore chest muscles and, something which is a first for me, the muscles around - [Koryu Uchinadi Kenpo-jutsu seminar roundup](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/07/koryu-uchinadi-kenpo-jutsu-seminar-roundup/) - The weekend just gone I had the chance to attend a two-day seminar with Renshi Jason Griffiths, a representative of Koyru Uchinadi Kenpo-jutsu, a style that has been brought back into practice by Hanshi Patrick McCarthy. If you're interested in reading up a bit on the style, the Wikipedia entry is here, and there is - [... yes, I'm still here :)](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/07/yes-im-still-here/) - Sorry again to everyone for the lack of updates!! I'm pretty much up to date with everything which will finally give me time to start blogging again! So stick with me and I'll have some fresh content coming later on this week. - [I'm still here :)](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/06/im-still-here/) - Just wanted to quickly post that I'm still around the place! Sorry for the lack of new content over the past week, things have been a little crazy around here, especially with work (I have a project looming with a definite end date of June 30, so it's required extra hours on top of my - [Wii Fit and amputees - first impressions!](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/06/wii-fit-and-amputees-first-impressions/) - Akin to what I was nerding about in my earlier post, below is my awesome review/first impressions of Wii Fit! For those unaware what Wii Fit is, check out the Wikipedia entry - it'll make more sense than my crazy ramblings in trying to describe it. Probably more informative too :) To quickly summarise to - [Nerd moment - original TMNT toys have been re-released???](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/06/nerd-moment-original-tmnt-toys-have-been-re-released/) - Spotted this at Target last week-ish: All the way down to the packaging, it's an exact replica of the original TMNT toys I used to love playing with when I was a kid!!! Truly crazy/nerdy stuff. I used to love TMNT (in fact, I still do - I'm so tragic :P), I wanted to get - [Oops, my knee's busted again :P](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/06/oops-my-knees-busted-again-p/) - Being the clever person I am, I was running around most of this afternoon in the office attending to stuff; when I came back to my desk towards the end of the day, I heard the familiar clickity-clack my knee makes when the spring's munted... and sure enough, my hunch was right - I've mangled - [Blog roundup (week ending 12 June, 2009)](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/06/blog-roundup-week-ending-12-june-2009/) - It's getting late and I have an early start tomorrow, but wanted to post at least something remotely worthwhile before I went to bed: The Martial Explorer: Project Natal Jesse over at The Martial Explorer has two posts (here and here) on Microsoft's new Project Natal tech they demo'd at E3 last week-ish. Being a - [Ack, haven't updated in nearly a week :P](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/06/ack-havent-updated-in-nearly-a-week-p/) - Hmmm, it's been a busy week or so, haven't had a chance to write another post since the last one - but don't fear, there's plenty on the way, including a full review of Wii Fit, but from an amputee's perspective! It'll include plenty of pics as well, most of which see me looking really - [Airport security and your prosthesis - always an adventure!](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/06/airport-security-and-your-prosthesis-always-an-adventure/) - One of the amusing/frustrating (but moreso amusing, you have to find things in life amusing, helps keep you sane) parts of being an amputee is dealing with airport security. Now, this wasn't too bad pre 9/11, but since then when global airport security ramped up, things have gotten... interesting :) Obviously, being an amputee, it's - [Amputee missing foot, but she still has her junior black belt (SunJournal.com)](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/06/amputee-missing-foot-but-she-still-has-her-junior-black-belt-sunjournalcom/) - Stumbled on this one via the Prosthetic Center of Excellence News blog - the Sun Journal has an awesome story on a young below-knee amputee's push to learn karate and earn her junior black belt! Now this is the kind of thing I love to read about - like the girl in the story, Jaedyn, - [New link - Prosthetic Center of Excellence](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/06/new-link-prosthetic-center-of-excellence/) - Just a quick post - added a link to a blog on Blogspot for the Prosthetic Center of Excellence. The blog's a run-down of stories posted by other news sources and looks like its repeated verbatim, so could be a great way to keep up with what's happening at least in the US on issues - [Training update from last week - arm conditioning!](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/06/training-update-from-last-week-arm-conditioning/) - It's a bit belated, but oh well - better late than never! Last week's training went well - put in as much effort as I could on the night and really felt good afterwards. I love it when you have a training session, your gi ends up getting soaked through all the persperation, you feel - [Wobbly leg](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/06/wobbly-leg/) - Nearly two weeks back Black Belt Mama wrote a post on the wonderful wonderfulment (yes, you read that correctly :P) that she terms Gym-Legs. While I can't profess to the plural, I can confidently say I have the case of the wobblies with my right leg. I spent the Saturday and Sunday afternoons just gone - [Good workout](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/05/good-workout/) - Just finished up a reasonably quick after-work session, and I have top say, it feels really good to get back into some good physical training. I'm finding that I'm gradually increasing the scope of my training sessions between classes - I'll now do 50 leg lifts, 100 crunches (with a mix of light- and medium-intensity - [Shin kicks](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/05/shin-kicks/) - I was over at Win Demeere's blog a few minutes ago reading through a couple of his recent posts, and he has a great two-part series on shin kicks (links - part one, and part two). I've been curious to see if I could use this technique for a while now, so will have to - [Hikite (withdrawing the hand) discussion on Ikigai](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/05/hikite-withdrawing-the-hand-discussion-on-ikigai/) - Last one for tonight before I go to bed! Matt's done a great post on hikite (withdrawing the hand) and its use/applications on his blog, Ikigai. I love Matt's posts because he often goes into plenty of detail and explains the practical application behind a number of techniques you learn in traditional Japanese martial arts - [Crazy throw thingie](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/05/crazy-throw-thingie/) - I saw this over on Patrick's Mokuren Dojo blog (visit it, it's a great blog): According to the post in question, this is an aikido technique called a gedanate. Not having studied aikido before (though I've read Twigger's rather ace Angry White Pajamas, which is an ace little book), I don't know much about this - [Transferring martial arts from two legs to one leg (literally)](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/05/transferring-martial-arts-from-two-legs-to-one-leg-literally/) - Okay, bit of background on this theory - when I seriously mangled my stump back in... early 2006, and had almost a year off from my training to recover from the damage, I found myself trying to transfer those skills to my existing condition and start to work on theorising how I could transfer the - [Stupid fun happy photo time](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/05/stupid-fun-happy-photo-time/) - Yes, that's me clutching a soccer ball between my leg and my stump whilst doing a handstand under water. I just thought it would be fun to share :) This is officially my shortest blog ever. I hope you're enjoyed it :) - [My foot no longer squeaks :)](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/05/my-foot-no-longer-squeaks/) - I've been having problems with my artificial foot for a few months now - whenever I've been walking around, it's been making loud squeaking noises - sounds like squeaky shoes cross with a squeaky floorboard. I thought it might have been to do with the foot enclosure, but when that got changed over, the problem - [I mangled my stump dancing to 80s Michael Jackson](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/05/i-mangled-my-stump-dancing-to-80s-michael-jackson/) - I think the title pretty much says it all :) Last Saturday my little brother, Tank, got hitched (yay!!! :D), and as a member of the wedding party (the best man actually :)), we were kept busy running around, having photos taken, that kind of thing. Now, one of the things with good weddings (and - [... and we're back!](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/05/and-were-back/) - Apologies for (a) the downtime last week, and (b) the lack of blogs of late. The former was due to some issues with my hosting provider affecting my site and apparently a number of others on the same server as they migrated to newer hardware - seems to be back up and running now, which - [Amputee shark attack victim returns to the surf](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/05/amputee-shark-attack-victim-returns-to-the-surf/) - Wifey passed along a story to me this morning - published in The Advertiser (13/5/2009, page 12), but originally published in The Daily Telegraph, it's a piece on Paul de Gelder who had his right hand ripped off in a shark attack while testing equipment for the navy; due to the nature of the attack, - [I'm on a boat](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/05/im-on-a-boat/) - Last week Wifey and I popped up to Noosa to catch up with her family. Now, my father-in-law and Hamez (brother-in-law, look up some of the archives as I've dragged him along to karate in the past) are particularly keen fishermen, so in due course I went out with them in their boat to do - [SA Martial Arts Newsletter #14 is out](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/05/sa-martial-arts-newsletter-14-is-out/) - Just a quick plug for this one - Chris has just sent out issue #14 of the SA Martial Arts Newsletter. For those who aren't familiar with it, this is the spiel from the newsletter's mission statement: The SA Martial Arts Newsletter is a non-profit, non-political effort to promote friendship and fraternity in the Adelaide - [One more for today!](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/05/one-more-for-today/) - I thought I was finished up, but I forgot to mention a cool little post from Patrick of Mokuren Dojo from a couple of weeks back. He's compiled a listing of various posts from his blog discussing martial arts and people with disabilities or special needs. Apart from mentioning yours truly in there (thanks Patrick!), - [Breathing correctly](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/05/breathing-correctly/) - I'm on a roll today ;) In catching up on things, I dropped by Jon's excellent and had to fire across a trackback for his recent post on the importance of correct breathing. I remember when I first started training in karate a number of years ago that I always wondered why the higher grades - [Congrats on the milestone Jesse!](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/05/congrats-on-the-milestone-jesse/) - I've finally started catching up on my blogs from the last couple of weeks, and I noticed on Jesse Crouch's blog, The Martial Explorer, that he's recently hit the 2-month mark for his blog. I've referenced Jesse's blog a couple of times already - he provided the stimulus for the post I did on prosthesis - [Ikigai interviews William Dometrich, Chito Ryu 9th Dan](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/05/ikigai-interviews-william-dometrich-chito-ryu-9th-dan/) - I love a good story with plenty of training history, particularly those of gaijin training over in Japan. Matt over at Ikigai posted up an interview with William Dometrich, Chito Ryu 9th Dan, about 2 weeks back, and it's definitely worth a read, covering (amongst other things) his start in Japan, kata and his experiences - [Movie double part 2 - Kuro-Obi (Black Belt) (2007)](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/05/movie-double-part-2-kuro-obi-black-belt-2007/) - If there's one thing I've continually come to love about Japanese cinema, it's how they can create something utterly poetic of what many see as a static, mundane or spent medium. Whether it be animation (and let's pick every Western film critic's favourite buzz-names, Mamoru Oshii or Hayao Miyazaki [nothing against either director BTW, but - [Movie double part 1 - Best of the Best (1989)](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/05/movie-double-part-1-best-of-the-best-1989/) - Alright, in my last post I said I would be writing up on two films watched back-to-back over two nights that inspired some true awesomeness. For this post, I'll be ranting about Best of the Best, a 1989 martial arts flick about a group of American martial artists who compete against an elite Korean martial - [My foot's fixed :)](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/04/my-foots-fixed/) - In awesome news, I managed to get my prosthetic foot enclosure fixed yesterday! Is very awesome, I'm extremely chuffed! While the fusion they did to hold the busted one together has actually proved to be extremely good in light of things (especially seeing it yesterday off the foot - I've got it as a just-in-case - [Cool prosthesis stuff](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/04/cool-prosthesis-stuff/) - I got a couple of e-mails from Jesse over at Martial Arts Explorer this week (check out his blog, it's awesome!), and one of them linked to a recent post over on Engadget, a site that I had totally forgot to check out on a semi-regular basis for cool new developments for prosthetic limbs. The - [The importance of breakfalls as an amputee (read: I fell over, and didn't mangle myself this time :P)](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/04/the-importance-of-breakfalls-as-an-amputee-read-i-fell-over-and-didnt-mangle-myself-this-time-p/) - Hmmm, definitely a candidate for "longest heading ever" on this blog :P Anywho, just a quick one to start off this morning - last night while getting ready for bed my stupid foot decided to weird out and my leg collapsed beneath me out of nowhere, throwing myself flat on my back without warning. In - [Trained last night, and I busted my foot up again!!!](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/04/trained-last-night-and-i-busted-my-foot-up-again/) - Well, I finally went back into training last night, and it was awesome :) I'm a bit sore today because I tried to push myself as far as I could, but it was definitely worth it. There's a grading on this weekend, but I'm definitely in need of further practice so I won't be attending. - [My foot's still mangled :P](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/04/my-foots-still-mangled-p/) - Well, dropped into the leg people yesterday to get them to do some work. Y'know, like a car service, but for a leg. I reckon I should slap on one of those "Your next service is due by June 2009, or 5,000 kms" on my leg. That way I'd be a bit better in getting - [Elevator punches](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/04/elevator-punches/) - Today's top tip - elevator punches. Now, this isn't some crazy new move I've stumbled across, but that's how I've named it :) Requirements are: - An elevator at your workplace that is empty at the time of use - Obsessed with training - No shame (in case caught) This one's simple - at work - [Changing up the training a bit - achieving strength without size?](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/04/changing-up-the-training-a-bit-achieving-strength-without-size/) - So, Easter's over and I have eaten my fill of chocolate and hot cross buns. Over the last couple of days I've also started catching up on some blogs around the traps, and came across an excellent post on Jesse Crouch's blog, The Martial Arts Explorer. To date, with my weight training between classes I've - [I split my foot](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/04/i-split-my-foot/) - Because I'm a very clever soul, I've managed to split the foot of my prosthesis: That's a shot showing where it's breaking off. Generally, this is caused by too much impact work when it comes to my kicks - on the previous style of foot I had, it would typically break along the top of - [Core strength - martial arts complementing life as an amputee](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/04/core-strength-martial-arts-complementing-life-as-an-amputee/) - What I want to talk about today is how building my core strength through karate has helped me as an amputee. Core strength is a term you'll often hear dedicated martial artists talk about, but rarely one used when discussing life as an amputee. While I understood the value of the concept previously, it's only - [Wolverine-like healing??](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/04/wolverine-like-healing/) - Alright, let's recap on this week's two stupid injuries - mangled my right thumb training on Monday night due to poor form, and whilst changing a tire on Wednesday night straight after work (because that's really what you want to be doing after a long, unproductive day in the carpark near your workplace :P), I - [I heart Rapid Fire](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/03/i-rapid-fire/) - Last night I watched the supremely awesome Rapid Fire, starring the late Brandon Lee. Now, let's get this straight - Rapid Fire isn't an example of some kind of crazy, mold-breaking martial arts flick that re-set the stage for Hollywood live-action martial arts movies (you can probably attribute that to The Matrix, which introduced Hollywood - [Bunkai is deceptive](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/04/bunkai-is-deceptive/) - Next time you think something with the relative simplicity of Heian Shodan doesn't have much to explore insofar as practical application is concerned, maybe you should think again. Patrick's blog is always a really good source of information, but this is perfect timing, as bunkai has become a regular topic of exploration in class over - [I mangled my thumb :P](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/03/i-mangled-my-thumb-p/) - In the spirit of rampant enthusiasm, after getting home from work and starting my workout tonight, I began my usual exercises on the punching bag. It's been a while since I'd worked on my backfists, so after some kicks and punches I thought I'd give it a whirl. Two weeks ago I got a bit - [Okinawan kobudo](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/03/okinawan-kobudo/) - I've wanted to learn - [Training roundup and grading](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/03/training-roundup-and-grading/) - Had training again last night - went really well. We covered the usual gear - basic warm-ups (including the new hip strengthening exercise we learned the other week at the seminar), basic drills (which I'm getting the hang of now), kata and kata applications. I thought I was going well with my kata, but last - [Bemusing Wifey](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/03/bemusing-wifey/) - I'm not sure if I'm the only who gets into this habit, but I thought I'd share. Between classes, I'm prone to wandering around the house doing karate. A punch here, a kick there, that kind of thing. Unfortunately (and often exacerbated when I miss a week's training), I often get a little too enthusiastic. - [Discussing the importance of form](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/03/discussing-the-importance-of-form/) - After reading a comment by Jon Law (of Epic Martial Arts Blog) in one of my previous posts, I had a look through some of the recent posts on his blog and noticed that form was being discussed, particularly with reference to the "form police", who if I'm understanding it correctly (and Jon, correct me - [Learning kata](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/03/learning-kata/) - I've been reading through some different martial arts blogs of late, inspired by some of the comments I'm getting from the wider community on my blog (super props to Black Belt Mama, as I'm pretty sure I can thank her for the recent attention!). I came across an excellent blog on BBM's website by guest - [Magic mud](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/03/magic-mud/) - So, looks like there was another good reason to hold off on training last night, as my knee started playing up again (not my fake one, the real one :P). My knee typically gives me some trouble from time to time due to the extra work it has to do in supporting my body, and - [Learning to walk again through karate](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/03/learning-to-walk-again-through-karate/) - Normally I'd be gearing up to train about now, but I was falling asleep at my desk, so I'm home taking it easy and having an early one tonight. This will likely ensure I get paid out next week at training, but that's fair enough :P Ever since I injured myself through lack of concentration - [Kata applications seminar](https://www.gisoku-budo.com/2009/03/kata-applications-seminar/) - Last night I attended my first martial arts seminar, in this case looking at kata applications from a traditional Okinawan/Ryukyu perspective.
